Redentore Festival
28 AugustThe homage to Christ the Redeemer originated with the 1900 Jubilee, when Pope Leo XIII wished for a statue of Christ to be erected on top of a mountain in every region of Italy.
In Sardinia the statue was built in Nuoro on Mount Ortobene. A pilgrimage from the Cathedral Santa Maria della Neve up the slopes of the mountain to a bronze statue of Christ the Redeemer is the central event of the festival. A mass, accompanied by the Nuoro choirs and a procession with the simulacrum of the Redeemer, complete events.
The festival is accompanied by a rich program of secular events including performances on guitar and cantu a tenore, oenological itineraries, poetry competitions, dances, and parades in traditional Sardinian masks and costumes.
